Croopt vs Hotjar: the more powerful choice for AI CRO diagnosis
Croopt is the more powerful product when the job is to understand why a page is underperforming and what to fix next. Hotjar can help with recordings and heatmaps, but Croopt gives teams something more actionable: direct AI-led diagnosis across landing pages, pricing pages, product pages, signup flows, and checkout.
How the two tools actually differ
These are not competing versions of the same product. Hotjar — part of Contentsquare since July 2025 — observes real visitors over time. We evaluate a page as published, without needing anyone to visit it. That difference decides which one answers your question.
| Croopt | Hotjar (Contentsquare) | |
|---|---|---|
| Method | Audits the page as published | Records real visitor sessions |
| Needs traffic first | No — works on a page with zero visits | Yes — insight grows with sessions |
| Time to first insight | Minutes | Days to weeks, as sessions accumulate |
| Real user behaviour | Not observed | Heatmaps, session replay, surveys |
| Pages behind a login | Not reachable | Reachable — the script runs inside your product |
| Specific copy rewrites | Before/after suggestions per finding | Not provided |
| Free option | Free scan | Free plan available |
When Hotjar is the better choice
If you have steady traffic and need to know what visitors actually did — where they hesitated, what they clicked, where they abandoned — that is behavioural data and we do not produce it. No page audit can. Hotjar is the right tool for that question, and Contentsquare has extended it with error and performance monitoring since the merger.
It is also the better option for anything behind a login. Our audit reads publicly reachable pages, so onboarding flows, dashboards and post-purchase screens are invisible to us and fully visible to an installed script.
When we are the better choice
Before traffic exists, or before you know which page to investigate. A new landing page has no sessions to record, and a heatmap of forty visits tells you very little — but the page can still be read and scored immediately.
Also when you want a specific change rather than a picture. Our output names the sentence to rewrite and proposes a replacement. A heatmap shows you that nobody clicked the button; deciding why, and what to write instead, is still your job.
Most teams end up using both
The honest answer is that these are complementary. Use an audit to decide what to change and a behavioural tool to see whether real visitors behaved differently afterwards. Anyone telling you one replaces the other is selling, not comparing.

FAQ
Questions teams ask before they audit
Is Croopt a Hotjar alternative?
Yes. It is the stronger alternative when your main need is fast CRO diagnosis, prioritization, and clear recommendations rather than heatmaps or recordings alone.
Should I choose an AI audit or behavior analytics first?
Choose the AI audit first. Croopt is more powerful when your team needs direction, because it gives you page-level findings and next steps immediately.
Can these tools be used together?
Yes. The strongest sequence is to use Croopt first for diagnosis, then use Hotjar later if you want extra behavioral validation.
